‘I’ve never trusted him,’ said Mphahlele, flexing his big fists under the table. He and Bernice sat at a simple street-side cafe opposite the Far Horizons hotel. The waiter had brought two steaming glasses of Repareet coffee to them some time ago, but neither had touched their drinks. ‘Of course you don’t trust him,’ said Bernice. ‘I don’t mean that,’ snapped Mphahlele. ‘It’s got nothing to do with jealousy, Benny. Believe me. But... think back to when we met him at the ball. Can you honesty tell me that you warmed to the man? That you didn’t find him... sinister?’ ‘I’m not sure what I thought of him,’ said Bernice. ‘He was rather charming, and I can understand what Lizbeth sees in him, but... well, he seemed very sad somehow. Tense or something.’ She finally took a swig from her glass. Like all Repareet coffee, it felt cold on her lips, but was warm in her mouth. It tasted faintly of vanilla and liquorice. ‘No, you’re right. I don’t trust him either.’ She placed the glass down on the table, watching the cogs turning behind Mphahlele ’s eyes. ‘So, what do we do now?’ ‘Well,’ said Mphahlele after a long pause, ‘I suggest you return to the hotel. Think of a reason. The most important thing we can do right now is link Csokor to the Bantu traders.’ ‘Why?’ ‘The Bantu Cooperative are here after being invited by the government; the government are trying to keep Lizbeth quiet; Lizbeth is intimately involved with Csokor... If we can prove that Csokor is working for the Bantu delegation, we must be some way to seeing the whole picture.’ Very neat,’ said Bernice, with a hint of sarcasm in her voice. ‘A circle of intrigue!’ She stared back at the hotel. There was a regular procession of expensive fliers coming to rest just outside the entrance; they disgorged their rich passengers, before sinking through a house-sized slot in the road into the underground parking matrix. ‘But you’re right, of course.’
